Alexander the Great had great difficulties in trying to subdue Afghanistan in his successful military and cultural expeditions in the Middle East. Its rugged terrain and equally-rugged people were not conquered or manageable. The same is true today of both country and people. The United States’ incursion into Afghanistan is as draining as it was to the great Macedonian conqueror of the 300s B.C.
